Applying and participating in the TD International Student GIC program can help expedite your study permit application. International students looking to meet the Government of Canada's Student Direct Stream Program (the "SDS Program") guidelines can do so by opening a TD Student Chequing Account and by prefunding their required Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) before arriving in Canada.

The bank account you'll typically use the most is a chequing account, which is where you can perform your day-to-day banking. In addition to a chequing account, you may also utilize a savings account to help you set some money aside. 

Once you start to settle in Canada, your needs may change and other accounts may be of value to you.


Yes, you will be able to open a bank account online. However, if you're looking to take advantage of the TD New to Canada Banking Package, you will be required to book an in-person appointment at your local TD branch in order to open an account.

If you currently live in China or India, you can call us to help you set up an account. However, you will have 75 days from your initial set up to visit a TD branch to activate your TD bank account.

Make sure you have your Canadian Immigration Visa ready when you call.

Once you arrive in Canada, visit a TD branch to activate your new bank account.
